Get the techniques I used to build an email list of 500,000 subscribers
When I started my blog, I had no idea what I was doing. I made several blunders that set me back years and cost me tens of thousands of dollars. Luckily, you don’t have to make the same mistakes I did.
I’ve compiled all the techniques I used to get 500,000 email subscribers in The Ultimate Guide to Email Copywriting.

Today’s question is:
“My subject matter is boring, and I’m in a crowded niche. How do I grab people’s attention?”
You know, when I was in college, I remember taking this class. We were assigned to groups. And at the end of the semester, we had to do a presentation.
I’ll never forget what happened. Every group would go up to the front and they would give this super boring presentation. “Look at this model. Look at these frameworks.”
Everyone in the audience knew it was boring. All of us were falling asleep. But guess what happened? When the next group got up, they did the same thing as the previous group. That’s the funny thing. We know when something is boring, yet we do the same thing as everyone else.
I have a technique to break out of it. It’s called the 3-Step Fascination Formula.
Step 1 – Pump up the energy 110%. Get excited! This is something you like talking about. The person watching it probably likes talking about it too.
Step 2 – Add a counterintuitive twist. An example I used in personal finance was, “There’s a limit to how much you can save, but no limit to how much you can earn.” That’s an interesting twist on something old. What can you come up with?
Step 3 – Use as many specific and vivid details as possible. For example, if I’m talking about nice vacations, I don’t just say that. I say, “What if you could take that island vacation and stay in that four star hotel? What if you got those chocolates on your pillow?”
This is great copywriting and the secret to standing out online.
The techniques I used to make a name for myself in a crowded niche
When I published my first blog post from my Stanford dorm room, I was just another personal finance blog among thousands. But over time I built a site with over 1 million monthly readers and an email list of 500,000 (and counting).
How did I do it?
