Instant creativity with Brian Koppelman

Yesterday we talked about creativity and the myth of “The Great Idea.”

I’m going to do that by introducing you to someone whose work you may be very familiar with (even if you don’t know him by name). I’d like you to meet Brian Koppelman.

Brian is a screenwriter, novelist, director, and producer. He’s one of the masterminds behind hit films such as Ocean’s Thirteen, Rounders, and The Illusionist.

Recently, he started a viral, Vine video series called The Six Second Screenwriter and became the host of the ESPN podcast, The Moment with Brian Koppelman.

Brian actually wrote his first screenplay, Rounders — one of my favorite movies — while working a full-time job.

And yet, given just a few hours a day to write and without having any formal training as a screenwriter, he managed to finish the screenplay (which eventually went on to gross $22.9 million in sales worldwide).

I loved hearing his story of how he produced hit after hit.

He didn’t want to be a one-hit wonder who came up with one idea and milked it for 20 years. He wanted to learn how to beat the odds, not through luck, but through a creative process.
