How to win when you’re not the best — with Arthur Chu

Ramit Sethi

Yesterday we talked about unconventional ways you can improve your odds of winning. Today I want to take you behind the scenes and show you how you can defeat opponents you have no business beating.

I’m going to do that by introducing you to someone you may remember from a year ago, Arthur Chu.

Arthur was a Jeopardy! contestant who, by his own admission, was no better at trivia than the average person on that show.

And yet, given just 30 days to prepare, and under the intense pressure of being in front of millions on national TV, he managed to win an astonishing 11 games in a row (earning $297k in the process).

How? He found a different way to play the game that would stack the odds in his favor and help him come out on top — even against smarter opponents.

When Arthur got the call to be on Jeopardy!, he had a choice. He could do what everyone else does and cram his brain with random trivia, then “hope for the best” and let the chips fall where they may.

OR, he could master the game being played around him. Focusing on the small things most contestants overlook that could give him a big advantage. That way he wouldn’t have to rely on “luck” or “knowing the most trivia” to have the best chance at winning.

It’s easy to look back and say, “Yeah, I’d take the unconventional approach,” but it’s much, much harder when it’s your life and the future is unknown.

Anyone who’s ever been on the show could have taken Arthur’s path, but 99% choose the conventional route.

What’s that tell you? That there’s a lot more going on here than just learning a few tactics.

Arthur’s strategy for winning goes way beyond Jeopardy!

I invited Arthur into our studio to talk one-on-one about what he did to go from average guy to 11X Jeopardy! Champion in such a short amount of time (and how some people hated him for it).

What shocked me was how the strategies and mindsets he used to become a champion can be directly applied to other areas of life.

From beating out “more qualified” applicants at a job interview, to asking your boss or clients for more money, the approach Arthur took to dominate Jeopardy! can be used to get Big Wins in many areas of your own life.
