Two more questions about 1-on-1 dream job coaching

After getting hundreds and hundreds of emails about working with people 1-on-1 to find their Dream Job (here’s a sample of about 40 minutes’ worth of emails), I’m leaning towards doing some kind of 1-on-1 elite group for finding a Dream Job…for a few of my best readers.
Based on capacity, I think I can give full attention to 40-50 people and keep the quality to my usual levels (aka I will work you to the bone). That’s a tiny fraction of the 200,000+ people reading this, but I really can’t handle more.
Let me share 5 interesting notes about the emails I got in the last few days.
POINT #1. It’s clear that a lot of you want to find your Dream Job…but aren’t sure how to find it. The mistakes I highlighted in my 80/20 video hit home with a lot of you.
POINT #2. The #1 barrier is finding out WHAT you want to do. Many of us hear words like “passion” and “do what we love” but can’t connect that to the real world. There’s no process, just drowning in a sea of ideas with no concrete structure for moving ahead.
POINT #3. Yet it’s clear that a lot of you are paying LIP SERVICE to what I’ve been talking about. Honestly, I’m not here to coddle you, so I’ll be straight with you about the glaring weaknesses I found. For example — and this was shocking to me — fully 90%+ of the emails I got were all about YOU. Why YOU should get selected coaching, why YOU deserve a better job, why YOU want help. Talking about yourself is fine (I asked to hear from you, after all), but less than 15 emails considered 1-on-1 from MY (Ramit’s) perspective.
Knowing that I’d get hundreds of emails, how could you stand out? Instead of declaring how you were such a hard worker (everyone says that), why not SHOW me by providing evidence of results you’ve gotten using my techniques? This is the same thing people do when they say, “I’m a dedicated, passionate worker who wants to achieve the stars.” Yeah, you and 2 million other people.
When you deeply understand the other person’s perspective, that can equal having 5+ more years’ experience. This is the technique I used to beat out Stanford MBAs for a highly paid internship…as a college sophomore.
POINT #4. The same old, tired tactics aren’t working. Creating a Twitter profile and getting on LinkedIn and submitting your resume to a black hole aren’t enough. Surely there must be other ways — and not just tactics, but a systematic way to integrate your network, deep research
POINT #5. Best of all, every single person who wrote in was willing to work HARD to find a Dream Job. I was delighted to see that none of you think this is a magical system to instantly find a Dream Job, because it’s not — it takes challenging work, repeated testing, and ongoing maintenance. But when you do it right, you can find the job of your dreams with an enviable salary. And every one of you seemed willing to invest the time and effort in.
Now, a few notes about the 1-on-1 material I’m thinking of doing.
Honestly, I hate doing events and I’d rather be the Voice of 1 Million, but getting tons of emails from you pushed me over the edge to consider this. I don’t know if it’ll work. I don’t know if I’ll even do it. If I don’t get the right people, I’ll simply cancel it and work on something else.
If I do, I need to figure out a way to screen people. Usually, I just insult people and half of them slink away, unable to counter my blog-based wit. Unfortunately, if I actually do this 1-on-1 idea, there are thousands and thousands of people who will apply, so I can’t accept everyone…which is a problem.
You guys also know that I’m a weirdo and fanatical about quality. You already saw the work that went into that 80/20 Video…and that was free. For my long blog posts, I spend 10-15 hours writing them, each. For my book’s table of contents, it took 8 months to perfect. If I’m going to do something, I’d rather do it beyond perfectly or not do it at all. That’s my own weird dysfunction, but I’ve learned to live with it. What does that mean? Doing this would take tons of time for me — and for the people who’d join this program.
That means that I want to have the RIGHT PEOPLE and the RIGHT INTERACTION.
- The “right people” means people who have demonstrated a bias for taking action, not simply people who claim that they’ll work hard. Everyone says they’ll work hard. Few actually do — and those people have almost always done so in the past.
- The “right interaction” means a combination of group support, 1-on-1 support, and personalized help with your Dream Job search. Maybe even an in-person meeting near one of my apartments in New York or San Francisco.
So, 2 questions for you:
- What do YOU contribute to the group? What unique characteristics do you bring? (Note that “I’ll work really hard” doesn’t count, nor does anything that 500+ other people would say.) Think about it from my perspective: Everyone claims they’re motivated, but I’m looking for the objective reasons that you’re an outstanding candidate for this program. That way, I can elevate the caliber of this group to a level unlike anything that’s ever been done. In short, what could you bring to the group that would make it stellar?
- What THREE things (3 only) would make this the program of a lifetime for you? Email access to me? Phone calls? In person? Helping you to find what your Dream Job is? Or how to find it? I’ll use your answers to decide how to structure this program.
Send your responses directly to me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Use “Two questions” in your email subject so I don’t miss your email.
The good news is that for the few people who are able to attend, you’ll get what I believe are the finest techniques for finding a Dream Job ever released — the very same I used to get jobs at companies like Google, Intuit, and a multi-billion-dollar hedge fund, as well as helping my friends find un-advertised jobs. Since I started working on Dream Jobs years ago, I’ve refined these techniques (and documented each one I developed after rigorous testing).
Few people know these powerful frameworks, techniques, and tactics, so I’m excited to be able to share them. But I regret that I won’t be able to share them with everyone due to time constraints.
So let me know, and thanks for your time.
P.S. As much as I’d love to do this for free, I need to be totally up front that this won’t be free, or even inexpensive. I love giving you free material that’s better than 99% of paid material (that’s what my free blog is for, and the free videos/material I’ll continue to send you), but I simply don’t have the bandwidth to help everyone 1-on-1 for free.
For people who want access to this material, it will be a significant investment. To put things in perspective, my hourly consulting rate is $2,000/hour. Again, this isn’t meant to shock you, but if I do this, I’ll be putting all my resources and time into this, and I’ll be looking for people who are ready to invest in themselves to get massively disproportionate results.
