The other cool thing about coming up with the idea is that...you'll have more ideas. Ramit, I think you're a perfect example of this, with all of the different projects you work on. The positive feedback of talking about a good idea and implementing it often yields MORE ideas. Some dude who steals your one crazy idea, what's he got? Just one idea, whereas you have the capacity to come up with lots more.

If it's a question of intellectual property, then document it! Write about it, get it 'on the record' somewhere (got a blog? written an academic paper?), and then go forward. Make the discussion process *part* of the documentation process, if you're that paranoid. Often doing research and writing will help you clarify even further why your idea is awesome (which will come in handy when it comes to selling it to other people).

Ideas are cheap, and there's a ton of research indicating that people come up with the same idea at the same time, even in different countries. So in your case, I'd bet it *was* a coincidence.

In any case, it doesn't really matter. You had an idea...so what? The person who implements, and implements well with some luck, wins.

Ramit,

I shared my revolutionary idea on recruting web 2.0 with someone 3 years ago. a few months ago, I noticed that someone in my town of 100k people had implemented the idea and had filed for a patent. Coincidence? I think not.

" I told them a few ideas I had for new designs on my t-shirt site"
Yeah, such ideas may be shared freely. But if we have
a really great idea, we shouldn't share it so easily.

Even when larger businesses deal with individual inventors the first thing they ask you is "HAVE YOU DISCUSSED THIS IDEA WITH ANYONE ELSE?" then they want you to sign a non-disclosure form...so, I am really on the fence with this one........You have to take the proper precautions before telling about your ideas...ALWAYS PROTECT YOUR IDEA....then talk about it!

In my opinion, with every aspect of life there is an abundance of everything even when it is hard to imagine so.

Even if someone steals your idea and benefits from it, you have done that person service. you can always come up with a new, perhaps even better idea or you can do the idea also and compete with the other person.

after all, you would have thought about the idea more than the other in the first place and may even come up with a way to improve on it.

I can appreciate the value of end-user feedfack, but that doesn't really help for the "implementation" stage. I have a great product with good feedback, but I want to sell the idea to a company with the resources to get it going. How do I protect the idea so that they don't just say "No thanks" and then make it on their own? Non-disclosure agreements are nice, but how much protection do they really offer?

I used to work with a business advice company, it was amazing how many people came asking for advice but would not tell you what they wanted to do! How on earth can you help someone who you have no idea what they are doing?!
After much persuasion they would finally agree to share their "secret" to be a web designer or a wedding planner, which of course no one has ever done before

Remi thanks a lot for this great article.

Matthew, I want to thank you too, because the last paragraph made me realise a lot. I was always struggling with problem of hiring employees but I was afraid of them stealing my knowhow. I am doing websites of many kinds and I would need full time employees, because I have many ideas. But I don't want to do some final processing of their jobs. I want them to know how the whole process is done and be independant and work for me. The problem is, that with my kind of work, it's not hard to do it for yourself. I would teach them all the earning process and I am afraid they would go on their own. But maybe I am still overrating people and I should view them more from the lazy point of view. I am now risking with some employees and will see how it comes. It seems like the only way how to learn something. Dip my hands to the reality of knowledge sharing.
