I find it a bit amusing that people complain about the cost of a pet. It's not like a child that might not be planned... You plan on getting a pet and you should find out ahead of time the costs associated with the pet. Now I do realize that there are always some unexpected costs, but thats what the "Pet Emergency Fund" is for right?
