I don't know if this has been resolved completely yet. But I'll throw in my 2 cents. You really can't go wrong with Rackspace.

We currently piggy back our hosting business off Rackspace and they are an absolute joy to work with. They custom quote everyone based on their needs and their support truly is 'Fanatical' as they say.

You should definitely give them a look if growth on this blog is a concern.

Heh, this sounds familiar to me, since I used to be a customer service rep for web hosting.

A lot of the big web-hosting companies will take down a site that is suddenly being hammered by visitors and using up a lot of bandwidth. If anyone here has a very busy site, make sure your host can handle the "digg effect."

I've used a 1and1 dedicated server for my hosting needs for a couple of years now without trouble. Even had to weather a couple of DDoSs behind their hardware firewall and didn't have trouble.

I think they're designed around being the ultimate in low-touch hosting, which does mean that their customer service can be problematic. It also means that they offer the best prices anywhere for low-touch services like root servers.

I definitely would not recommend anyone use them for shared hosting, but both my root server and those of several friends have never given us trouble, so I do recommend 1and1 dedicated hosting.

I've used GoDaddy for hosting for a while and they've actually been quite good. The control panel is a little stripped down, but the price is good and servers stay up...

An urban exploration site I use, uer.ca, has a sizable database and is very high-traffic(kind of the defining site within its niche). It also used 1&1, and after having similar troubles(downtime and horrible support response) about a month or two ago, switched to their own server in a colo facility.

Congrats on the mention in marketwatch. I do agree most 18-34 yr olds rather to talk to their peer or a blog than read it from a brokerage firm

Boy do I hear you.

I sent out query letters to an epublisher I admired, referencing my two blogs (proof that I'm not just a here today, gone tomorrow writer). The moment I pressed send, BOTH went done (one for legal reasons, the other for a hosting snafu).

Life has a way of keeping us humble.

I also had problems with hosting, but I've resolved them after some time.

IF you want to keep all your quality content online, try to have a quality hosting provider ..
