@Benita: I guess e-Rewards is invite-only now. You have to be invited via one of the sponsors; the list of sponsors is here. Borders seems to be the easiest place to get an invite from.

I've saved a little over 1000 so far... :D

I've canceled all the monthly subscriptions i don't need. I've used freecycle.org and got a dinning table for free. I take sack lunches to work which saves me about 50 a week. I just need to modify my system a little more and i'll be able to save more. :D

wow...Nikki you are right and props for surviving on that income. I do agree that a lot of Americans don't save much, but let me ask you this: you did all that on a $20k salary because you had to. If you lived on $60k/year in LA, would you have employed all your saving tactics. It's great that you can get free audio equip. gently used...but if you can afford it and feel funny about owning something used (may be not audio equip. but perhaps a couch or clothes), why would you not go for it. That does not mean you are not being frugal, since I believe the true definition of frugal is living within your means...and as long as you can accomplish that, you are good. Ramit's advice is directed more to people who live beyond their means or are not saving enough. If you have already mastered these savings tactics, then I doubt you can save $1k in a month (that's 60% of $20k/yr on a monthly basis).

That said, your tips are much appreciated, but please take into account the applicability of these tips. I may be wrong, but I doubt many people on this forum would actually swap clothes with friends that they hang out with (unless they had to do it out of necessity).

Now, I'm Indian...so saving is in our blood (we call it "being smart"....Russell Peters anyone?). However, it always involves giving something up...which is why I like articles on increasing income rather than saving. The limiting quantity is not money, it's time. You can spend it saving or spend it earning....the trick is to walk that fine line between the two to let you get the most bang for the "hour."
