Ramit’s Best of 2014

Ramit Sethi · December 29th, 2014

I always love hearing how people spend their holidays — mostly because some people have truly insane families. I looked at what my friends are doing, and it’s either…

  • Filled in a loving environment eating decadent holiday food, relaxing, and watching children play with their new gifts
  • Hating life, listening to a racist uncle at dinner, hiding in a bedroom, reading reddit from the bathroom, counting the minutes until they can go home

That’s why my new holiday pastime is listening to crazy stories of crazy families. I LOVE IT. Indian people usually don’t have these stories, so if you have a crazy story from this Christmas, send it to me. Not for some research or future course. Just for my personal entertainment. Ok, now to the best posts of 2014. 2014 was the Year of Unapologetic Mastery, and my goal was to show you how it’s OK to be ambitious. Not to cut back on everything, but to actively seek mastery. Together, we got some great results, like these IWT students:

But even if you didn’t earn tens of thousands of dollars or get a new job, there’s value in making small progress. For example, each of these small examples is a huge step in the right direction. Which of us…

  • Went to an event where you knew NO ONE…something you never would have been able to do 2 years ago?
  • Worked up the courage to call your cell phone company and negotiate your bill — and now you see that savings every month?
  • Started working out just once/week?
  • Asked someone out that you liked?
  • Set boundaries around a troublesome relationship?
  • Tested responses to the question “what do you do?” and completely changed people’s first impression of you

A Rich Life is about more than just money. Since 2004, when I launched IWT, I’ve always said that money is just a small part of a Rich Life. That’s why I spend so much time talking about mastering other skills — there’s so much more to being Rich than money alone. For example, looking great, feeling amazing, and having your dream job are all key parts of a Rich Life. And we’ll explore more of them in 2015. Notice that while I make fun of stupid IWT readers on Instagram all the time, I’ve never faulted someone for not having 6 figures in the bank, or not knowing what their purpose on earth is yet. But I insist that my students focus on the right decisions that will lead to a Rich Life — whatever that means for you. No guilt. No judgments. Just one step at a time, together. To help, here are 10 of my favorite posts from 2014: Productivity

Stop procrastinating and finish what you start. I answer reader questions about motivation and procrastination. For example, “how do I finish everything I have to do?” Includes a 4-minute video with 3 steps you can take today to start following through on what you start.

How to stop feeling overwhelmed. With so many different “to-dos” we could focus on each day, it’s no wonder we’re stressed and overwhelmed. There’s a better way…and I want to show you. How you can become more confident today. A few years ago, I got interested in improving my social skills. I wanted to go from socially awkward to smooth. I want to show you how to become a social natural, too. Find out how you can improve your social skills in this short video.

My Ultimate Guide to making money. A question I’m asked all the time is, “how do I make more money?” Earning more gives you freedom to take a tropical getaway, pay off debt faster, treat your friends to a round of drinks (or something else). My Ultimate Guide can show you how.

Thanks Ramit for all you do – so much amazing content day after day. Per your question – I’d love to read any advice / thoughts you have for moms who want to work from home. I’m a mom of 2 girls -age 3 and 1 – and like many of my friends I am constantly trying to figure out how to be a great mom to these amazing girls and contribute financially to our family. We live in SF and want to buy a home soon and thus need a second income. I know you don’t have kids but the conflict I feel as a mom and the need / desire to make money is a real challenge with most moms know. Maybe not the sexiest topic 🙂 Perhaps I’ll have to wait till you get married and have kids to hear about how you work it all out!

Again – thanks for all you do!

  2. Ramit, I loved listening to Tim Ferriss interview you for his podcast. It inspired me to sign up for your How To Talk To Anybody Course. I love meeting people and I’m always looking for ways to continue to fine tune my social skills. The content is excellent! Thank you.
I’m lucky enough to have a beautifully designed website where I share my passion for all things health and wellness related. I also sell a high end hydrolysed collagen supplement. I wrote all the blog posts, created a very nice opt in, shared delicious recipes that are professionally photographed, and have lots of information about my supplement. My problem is that I’m stuck and I don’t have a strategy for selling something I really believe in. Even getting people to opt in has proved challenging! Learning how to create a strategy to get my business moving is what I’m looking for.

I just finished your book and it was a real eye opener. Everywhere I look I see either savings or possible debt. I recently came across a site called betterment. They claim to be the evolution of Vanguard. I’ve been saving for a Vanguard account and wanted to get your opinion on betterment. Thanks

You have a ton of good advice here, Ramit. Thank you. I especially appreciate the network of experts you bring into play. Chris is very inspirational. He is a prime example of “think big, but take your journey (literally) one step at a time.”

  6. In 34 years on this earth, this was by far the best Christmas – I spent 3 days in the hospital with Pneumonia, struggled to make it a good first Christmas for my 4 month old daughter yet was able to elude family and “bonding time” due to me being under the weather… Not like I was pneumonia every year, but it gave me an excuse to sleep for a week and close my office (I’m a primary care physician)…. In my whole life this is the only true rest I got! It truly was a Merry Christmas without all the award conversations and forced interactions with family ;blood and through law) with whom I have nothing in common. Here’s to a happy 2015!

  8. I started the year with your Unapologetic Mastery and I followed through closely. I saw you grow. It helped me, and many others. Among others, you are very good at the topic of “human relationships”. Keep it up in 2015. Happy New Year Ramit.

Work, work and hard work is the secret to success, in my opinion. Add some skills and talent and you have the perfect job. Freelance or employee, it’s important to like it.

Here’s my MORE. I want to dance like Bruno Mars. Actually the first minute and a half of this video reminded me of you, Ramit….the sheer joy of MORE. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPf0YbXqDm0 Thanks for your unabashed vitality. Ready to learn how to dance?

i think you really suck…just read your post about frat boys idea (you blocked comments because everybody was telling you how a douchebag you were ),and basically you pretend to know why 8 kind of business (which still today make a lot of people earn some million per year) are not possible to put in to work just because you can t figure it out why..earning money with t shirt is really easy, for example, unless you have a very shitty website (like bittershirt),and only a few stupid ideas…you shouldn’t give people advice on how to do stuff, because you suck at it

… If you’re going to try and put someone down-with no factual bases, you may want to fully apply yourself. Instead you provide a few poor grammatically structured -of what I would assume we’re sentences, on a forum.

I’m going to go out on a limb on this one and say it’s a jealousy thing-but hey, that’s just me.

  13. Nice Ramit, I Love Your Passion And Guidance for all.
Yes in life every person always needs a man who guide him well. It is not possible to understand what is right or wrong in modern life or fast life.

  14. I am interested in your product. But i am eager to know about the exact way you work.

  15. Sir, I have been reading and listening to some or the other motivational stuff since long. I always needed a force, a power to cope up with my weaknesses which although were not in me but had been created by me unknowingly due to my procrastinating nature. I got this force when I read your blog I feel really blessed because you speak about the practical things that are really important for my life. You have helped me explore my real self and not the ideal things which merely sound good but never work practically. Thank you so much Sir for your efforts.

  16. I like what you guys are usually up too. Such clever work and reporting!
Keep up the wonderful works guys I’ve added you guys to
    our blogroll.
