Ramit, you definitely got me interested in the program. I love how you give out free awesome content (as you’ve always been) to the extent that people want to get more. There’s a lot we can learn from you in entrepreneurship.

I’ve just begun my freelancing business few days ago, helping new bloggers get started, and I must say that this post came just in time to pull me out from the devaluing trap. There’s always this inner voice that tells me, “Maybe you should lower your rates. Maybe you should do more for your clients. Maybe you should give in.” As much as I knew I could fight it off and be more confident, it’s always great to hear it from someone else like you and Susan.

That’s the power of being around great people, and that includes all of you guys here!

Aahhhh…I faced the same problem a few weeks ago! Someone asked me for my rates. I checked a trade site for per word/per hour numbers and picked the low end (I’ve only been doing this for about a year). Even then, the amount was so, so, so much higher than what I’d ever charged.

The weird feelings began. Would the woman think I was lying? What if she thought I wasn’t good enough to deserve that rate? OMG, what if I looked like a clown?!? Blah blah blah… I almost started to use mealy words, but I cut them out and made the note strong. I pressed the “Send” button.

Well…she still wants to work with me, I think, but I felt so good after sending that email.I now know that I can ask those rates and that I deserve it. I also know that people DO think my work is worth it. So, yes…this is soooo true.

Hey Ramit:

This is the exact problem that I have been dealing with. My main focus right now is to gain experience and get a job. Freelancing is something that I might consider way down the road.

However, I caught myself many times underselling myself in the interviews and when meeting other people. Matter of fact, many people have told me the same problem: do not undersell yourself or as you say – devalue.

So I guess it is an issue of not freelancing per say, but of more of general problem of confidence or knowing your own value.

Thanks for bringing this up. I feel like my life is telling: get this under control and the world of opportunities is going to open up for you!
