Probably one of my favorite emails ever.
Ramit,
Hello. My name is Kayla and my brother actually sent me your recent entry about college financial aid at Stanford University. I was definitely interested because I know that college is going to be very difficult for me to pay for and, quite honestly, I’m really not looking forward to years of student debt. Anyway, I actually just wanted to thank you. I really never thought about how much scholarship money is probably never even given away. It’s really encouraging to hear that, with just a little effort, I could potentially come out of college with little to no debt at all.
Now, I’m not saying my grades are necessarily perfect, but I have goals. I’m actually planning on going to the University of Iowa as a pre-business major and then going to the Tippie College of Business so your advice, in all senses, is going to really help me out. So, like I said, I’d really like to thank you for opening up my eyes about everything.
Sincerely,
Kayla
College at Stanford is now effectively free. So what’s your excuse?

Hell yeah Kayla. Go Hawks!
Spent the best 4 years of my life in Iowa City as a Marketing major. It really is a great program, both socially as well as academically.
I'd highly recommend you get in touch with the Office of Student Financial Aid on campus and take advantage of as many opportunities as you can. Good luck, On Iowa.

Awesome Kayla!
Being a scholarship girl myself (my scholarship win for volunteer work paid for 4 years of university - long shots sometimes happen), I am cheering for you. Apply to anything and everything. It is worth taking the chance.
Congrats also Ramit!
My motto is that if I can change one life for the better, my own life would be worth it.
You have done exactly that.

Kayla - there are TONS of books...spend the $20 on Amazon (old versions are fine and put you in the right direction):

As my mother once told me - if there is ANYTHING that is WORTH making the investment in, it is ALWAYS your brain/education - it's worth the money and nobody can ever take it away from you....there is TONS of money out there - you just have to be willing to put in the time to find it...

A lot of people can SAY things like this -- it's only "mission accomplished" if she comes back with scholarship money or having applied or gone to college or something....actually taken action.

I love this email.
And for every email sent, there are tons of people you've affected who don't think to say thank you.
So, thanks for kicking my own butt, Ramit. Thanks for making me open a Roth, track my finances, and seek more knowledge about finances. Thanks for opening my eyes and making me take action.

So Ben, you're assuming that Ramit's mission was to have a reader actually win a scholarship.
How do you know it wasn't to spread awareness of scholarships?
Frankly I believe that if you are aware of scholarships, need a scholarship, and don't bother applying, you don't deserve one anyway.
