I Will Teach You To Be Rich is a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller

April 6, 2009 · 49 comments

I have some GREAT news: Late last week, I learned that I Will Teach You To Be Rich is a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller.

I announced this at my book launch party last week with about 50 of my friends:

From the NYT:
nyt-bestseller
See the online version here: New York Times bestselling books

Now, for the Wall Street Journal:
wall-street-journal-bestseller
See the online version here: Wall Street Journal bestselling books

Wow — this is incredible!!!! Last week, I wrote about how rich I felt in telling my parents how we sold out at #1 in Amazon.

But this is even more than I hoped for. It means that thousands and thousands of people have bought the book and started thinking about conscious spending, negotiating, automation, and living a rich life.

First of all, I’ve instructed my friends that whenever they introduce me to ANYONE, they have to say, loudly, “THIS IS MY FRIEND, NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR RAMIT SETHI.” I really think they’re going to like that.

Also, this means things are about to get very big. I’ll be going on tour in 15+ cities, and I’d love to meet. I’ve set up a list of cities and dates at http://www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com/book.

And to all the bloggers, and friends, and readers who have helped — some of you have been with me since 2004 — thanks again. We’re just getting started.

Hey dude, congrats, FYI the link to your cities/dates page is broken. Looks like you’ve got an extra ‘teach’ in there.

Hey Ramit,

Congrats for becoming ‘NY Times Bestselling Author’. It’s no wonder to a reader who has been visiting yr blog since 2004. You have given so much to the community since then that you’ve definitely earned the spot in NY Times and WSJ.

You’re a perfect example of yr own blog post: It’s not about the money–although you’ll get plenty of it when you create something lasting.

Holy, yes, congrats… I will definitely check out YOUR publisher when it’s time… much of this will also be due to how great they are at the marketing and distrib – although you definitely did alot of that, too.

Well done, Ramit! What a remarkable achievement! Unfortunately I will be out of town when you are in Seattle – doh! But I wish you the best of success while in the Emerald City!

I’d like to know what your opinion is of affiliate programs. I just signed up with a marketing system that is feeding me referrals and basically building a downline for me automatically (I’ve gotten 15 people in 2 days!). It seems legit and I’m personally shocked at how easy this is.

Do you have any experience promoting affiliate programs or do you have an opinion about them?

23 Andrew Warner April 6, 2009 at 12:47 pm

Oh wow Ramit! That’s incredible. Congratulations!

24 Jourdan April 6, 2009 at 1:00 pm

I’m excited to see you’ll be coming to SLC!

25 Allison O'Neill April 6, 2009 at 2:03 pm

Congrats all the way from New Zealand Ramit. Your success is so inspiring – watching that video nearly made me cry!!!!!! Feel free to share your book marketing secrets sometime soon (I really need them!).

26 HollyS April 6, 2009 at 3:05 pm

Congrats, Ramit! I’m not really that surprised, though; I knew you would go far.

In case anybody is wondering if Ramit lives up to this statement (that he posted last week, and many times before): “Focus on helping people before you try to make money.”, he definitely does, and not just when he’s posting publicly. I emailed him asking a personal finance question a couple of years ago, and he took the time to reply to me (and it was a good answer, too). I can’t wait to pick up the book!

27 J. Money April 6, 2009 at 3:24 pm

Freakin’ brilliant my man – congrats!

28 Pat April 6, 2009 at 4:04 pm

Ramit –
Now you can go on Oprah and perhaps meet Suze in person! Seriously this is a wonderful accomplishment – congrats! Speaking of Suze, what do you think of her latest advice on not paying down cc debt but stashing cash instead? I’m due for a refund that could pay off one of my cc’s and don’t have a huge emergency fund. I was going to pay off the card and now am in a quandry. What would you do?

29 Taka Torimoto April 7, 2009 at 9:14 am

Absolutely awesome – wish your book tour included Atlanta though. Congrats!

30 Aman@BullsBattleBears April 7, 2009 at 9:49 am

What an awesome book. My teens are reading it now to get a grasp on spending/saving/investing. Entertaining and educational. To get a good start with money is so important and this book covers the basics perfectly.

This is absolutely awesome! You are an inspiration to me and my wife and I am so happy for the success you are seeing. We have also seen a lot of success since we started reading your blog early last year. We have used your strategies to pay of three of four CC in less than 1.5 yrs.

I have bought three copies of your book that I am giving out for Easter, one for me, one for my sister and one for my buddy in Atlanta.

Keep up the great work,

Great job on the bestseller! Will you be writing at some point about how you wrote your bestseller, and the process you took to get it to the bestselling position?

38 Tony April 9, 2009 at 11:48 pm

p.s. Shame about Atlanta.

Congratulations, Ramit. I read the book in 4 days over vacation. Lots of great stuff. I am now giving it to my girlfriend. This can avoid some awkward conversations about money in the future.

Hi Ramit,

I saw the tour dates, I was wondering at what location and time would you be in Seattle? I am very interesting in meeting you.

42 Darrin April 16, 2009 at 1:39 pm

It’s the first time I commented here and I must say you share us genuine, and quality information for bloggers! Good job.
p.s. You have a very good template for your blog. Where did you find it?

45 Srinivas Rao May 6, 2009 at 8:23 am

Your book is on my list of purchases for this week. I just graduated from bschool and so your book is very relevant to what I’m going through.

I’m a Cal Alum, so I won’t hold it against you that you went to Stanford, since you can teach me how to be rich :) . j/k. Look forward to getting your book.
