Thought provoking article, concise, & readable. Controversial take on social media. Research says results of social media on sales are immeasurable. Greatest challenge is finding “highest value” activities for your time. As someone who has been involved in many entrepreneurial ventures and worked as an employee, one cannot underestimate the time, effort, & discipline necessary to generate income.

I think the best advice you can give to someone about to start a business is what you put in is what you will get out. I can’t stand the people that want to make money but aren’t willing to do any legwork.. well duh, that’s what we all want.

Ramit,

Excellent post. One of my favorite for sure, and very timely for me.

I have a background in structural engineering, and have considered freelancing these skills from time to time, but get stuck at different points. Sometimes it’s the “too many ideas” point that you mentioned, other times it’s just laziness on my part. Recently I’ve been challenged in trying to overcome some of the accreditation barriers that exist in my field (i.e. having a PE license, not being able to stamp drawings or provide counsel, etc.) I imagine similar benchmarks and barriers and exist for people in accounting fields, or perhaps financial advisor roles.

I’m wondering if you have any thoughts on how to get past these types of obstacles to freelancing and earning more money.

it seems like in today’s day an age you can use a site like Craigslist.org to get some initial clients and once you have earned some money off that you can potentially reinvest into a website or online marketing to gain your own clients and lead data base that will help you get a low budget business off the ground.

this is something you can do part-time as you move toward more financial freedom.

Thank you for all of the wonderful ideas. I have a brain tumor, a cyst where my spinal cord meets my brain stem and I also have sarcoidosis. I get sick easy, but I do not want to loose my home. I have two daughters, one of which starts college this fall. I do not know how I am going to do it. I live in the middle of no-where and as you know, the economy stinks! But, you have given me some great ideas and I am willing to try anything to get my family back on track from the debt we have because of meds and medical bills. I thank you!
