Announcing The Sethi Scholarships

Posted at 10:17 on Wednesday April 26, 2006 | Filed Under Personal entrepreneurship

Today I'm really happy to announce The Sethi Scholarships for Young Entrepreneurs.

These scholarships are for young entrepreneurs to make a difference. Right now, I'm limiting applications to high school seniors from my old high school. I'll open up the applications to others as soon as I can.

This is something I've wanted to do ever since I got my first scholarship. And starting a scholarship is on my list of Why Do You Want To Be Rich?

That's probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Great work Ramit.

Congrats Ramit!

Let me know if you need any help!

Oh, a thought for when you expand your scholarship.

You might want to ask for reference letters.
That's more for the students than for yourself.
I still have mine.
I used them to land jobs but more importantly to pump up my self esteem when the starting up blues tried to suck me under.

What an excellent thing to do with your wealth! It's something I've wanted to do as well, especially if I can fill in a "hole" in the kinds of scholarships available -- maybe a scholarship for kids who show great passion for a field but who didn't get straight A's in high school.

This is fantastic, Ramit!

For those of us learning to "be rich" from you...tell us how you financed this scholarship. Are you just going to donate the money out of your annual earnings? Perhaps you created a perpetuity for yourself by buying fixed-income securities?

Ramit - it was about time you had your own Wikipedia entry, maybe the community can add to the stub I started. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramit_Sethi

Great idea! Unfortunetly for me, I didn't go to your high school so I can't snag up some free college money. I only got one scholarship when I went to college for $500 bucks, it wasn't much, but at least it paid for my first semester's books.

I think it's an excellent idea, but you have a spelling mistake in the announcement. It should be "a community" organization, not "an community".

That's a great thing to give back like that. Congratulations!

I really enjoy your blog. Keep up the nice work.

Hi Ramit,

It's a bit late, but congratulations!

So...after reading this post, I've been thinking that this is something I'd also like to do in my lifetime. Would you be willing to write more about the financial aspects of this thing (for example, do you keep the scholarship money invested in any specific kind of account? How does the amount of money you allot every year relate to this? Are there any tax regulations you have to consider?) The idea is a little intimidating, given that I'm still pretty young...but you've make me want to start considering it now.
