Examples of barriers

Posted at 8:19 on Friday November 04, 2005 | Filed Under Personal entrepreneurship

Barriers, which I wrote about before, aren't just my idea. Here are some nice examples of other bloggers writing about them from diverse areas:

From 37 signals:

Don’t waste time on trouble spots that don’t even exist yet

Sure, you need to prepare a bit ahead of time but you should never inflate a problem until it actually is a problem.

For example:

  • Do you really need to worry about scaling to 100,000 users today if it will take you two years to get there?
  • Do you really have to hire eight programmers if you only need three today?
  • Do you really need 12 servers now if you can run on two for a year?
  • People often spend too much time up front trying to solve problems they don’t even have yet.

Notice the immediate pushback to his idea in the comments!

The second example is from Church of the Customer:

...marketers should focus on creating products and services that are worth talking about before they start worrying about measuring to the nth degree.

This is probably heresy at some companies, and it's not easy to change a cultural underpinning like that. Be remarkable now. Measurement can come later.

Hello,

the link to 37signals is incorrect; it points to the other blog

With software design at least it is often much easier to design something to scale insanely once than it is to re-write it.

After saying that Ramit, you are an inspiration. Your posts are always fantastic and I get so much from them.

Thank you :)
